My husband and I just did our first section of the Midstate. We parked at Rt 16 in Douglas, hiked south to the terminus at the border and then stayed overnight at the shelter just north of the border . We hiked back to our car the next day.
The trail was well marked and easy to follow in that section. The big thing is the drought. There was a lack of water sources. Thankfully a trail angel left a full unopened gallon bottle at the shelter or we would not have had enough even though we brought 2L with us.
The shelter was great. It was in a beautiful clearing. There was a shovel and a hatchet there to use. The only thing is, we missed the location at first walking southbound, it was hard to see. Walking back northbound, it was easily visible. Having the gps coordinates helped.
Right before dawn we heard an owl take down some kind of prey nearby in a very loud violent way. Very cool. Other than that, no wildlife out of the ordinary. There were some burrowing bees along the trail but they didn't bother us. It was a little bit buggy too.
Looking forward to doing another section soon.
