Hi, all! I am planning a N/S through-hike of the MT this summer. I've scoured this message board and the Internet for accurate directions to the northern terminus of the trail and couldn't find a definitive answer. The closest I got was to park in the Mt. Watatic parking lot, then hike up the MT to the New Hampshire border to the start of the trail, then retrace my steps southward. Is this really what I have to do to start my hike at the beginning of the MT? Is there a better way to reach the northern terminus of the trail?

hello! I think you are right. I don't think there's a way to find the trail by road on the New Hampshire side so pretty sure you would have to park at the trail entrance on route 119 and hike up and double back. The guide says it's only 1.06 miles from the MA/NH border to the parking lot though so won't be too bad. The parking lot is off of route 119, 1.6 miles west of 101 intersection. The parking shouldn't be that hard to find.

Perhaps you can be an explorer to find a new route. If you notice on various maps there is a road in New Ipswich New Hampshire called Children of the Woods Tavern Road which appears to end directly due north of the northern terminus. My understanding is that this was actually Old County Road and before that the Great Road from Rindge to Ashby but has not been used as a public road for 150 years. It is likely impassable by car, but who knows? My estimates could be off but it seems like even if you had to walk it from Page Hill Rd, its only about a 1/2 to 3/4 mile. My guess is everyone comes in from the rt 119 parking area for a reason though.
