May of 2009 while heading south on the midstate trail about one third of a mile south of Sampsons Pebble in Oakham a Black Bear ran across the trail a few hundred feet in front of me.
Around 2005 while on the Midstate where it passes through the Burncoat Pond Audubon property at the junction with the Beaver Bend Trail there were a pair of otters next to the footbridge in the swampy area of Burncoat Pond.

During a 50 mile hike on the Midstate we found ourselves on the South side of Mt Wachusett late in the day. Two porcupines walked right up to us didn't seem the least bit afraid New experience for all three of us
