I am continuing to chip away at the Midstate Trail. Yesterday, I hiked from Bush Lane (Rt.68) to the parking lot for the Mass Rail Trail at Rt.122, on the other side of Rutland. The Barre Falls Dam was loaded with disc golfers, and the trail had more than a few mountain bikers. The trail has some very rocky areas and enough hills to remind you that you're not in your twenties anymore. This section was a little over 11 miles, and it did get hot in the afternoon. The superintendent's office at Barre Falls is closed on Sundays, so you have to remember to pack enough water. I didn't. I saw a young couple and their baby on the trail, and an old-timer who was mountain biking. Years past, he hiked the Long Trail and parts of the Appalachian Trail. A very interesting guy. I've met some of the nicest people on the trail. It was nice to find a couple of granite benches on the way. I made very good use of them.

Last Sunday I continued my hike down the MST. I started at Rt.122 in Rutland and traveled about 7.6 miles to the 4-H Club parking lot in Spencer. I tried to get an early start, because the weather report said it was going to be hot. Well, it did get hot, but the bugs were worse. No surprise for this time of year. Black flies, mosquitoes and I was the daily special. There were more people on the trail this time. Hikers with dogs, a group of boy scouts on an overnight, but I had the trail to myself from Oakham into North Spencer. I left a note in the trail log at the shelter just north of East Hill Road. I dedicated the hike to my mother--that's right, it was mother's day.

I dont mean to be a pain, but...
A well meaning person sent me a list of hikes but they are on weekdays. I recall a time, not too long ago, when there were local walks/hikes in central Mass.
Anyone willing to contact me regarding this is welcome...I usually walk daily at the Rail Trail in West Boylston, but would be able to participate in easy hikes...
