I hiked a segment of the MST yesterday South from Rt 9 in Spencer to Old Worcester Road, Charlton. During this hike both the snake and I were quite startled in the grassy fields on top of the hill just west of Burncoat Pond. Did not see it long enough to recognize its type, but it was about 2 ft long. Much further south at the railroad bridge there were three Turkey Vultures just perched in the trees and flying around the trees near this bridge. They all had perched in trees all within sight of the train/road crossing. Seems they were waiting for the train and or cars to create some road kill. Walking up Northside Cemetery I seen what looked like an Acadian Flycatcher or Yellow Warbler tugging at some leaf blossoms and flying away with a gathering to use this bundle to build a nest. I seen several red winged black birds during my trek south. The mosquitos are out, but not too bad and I would rate my buggy experience at a 2 on a scale of 10. I did not gather any ticks during this segment. I did use bug spray.
