My friend and I are planning on thru-hiking the trail starting April 15, 2017 and hopefully finishing by April 21. We plan to start at the New Hampshire border and hike south. Looking forward to experiencing the trail!

Good luck on your hike!
I'm sure you're aware if you're planning to camp on the trail there is a good 35 miles between the shelter at Moose Hill and the one at the southern terminus. I've section hiked the southern half of the trail and there is a LOT of road walking. So I'd recommend planning carefully your daily mileage to where you intend to sleep during your second half.

Hi Pat! Thanks for posting and your recommendations! We started our hike at the NH border after hiking in from Route 119 and headed south. We planned on staying at the Muddy Pond Shelter, but found that it had a large group staying there that night so we hiked on to about mile 13 and stealth camped just off the trail. The second day we hiked around 18 miles, passing over Mt. Wachusett and stealth camping again just after crossing over Route 62. The third day we hiked about 23 miles and stayed at Moose Hill Shelter. When we were crossing over Route 31 in Spencer I found that there was a pizza grille just a quarter mile down the road - it was a great place to have a hot meal after living in the woods for three days! It got down to 35 degrees in the overnight at Moose Hill Shelter. The fourth day we hiked about 20 miles to Oxford and were able to stay at a family's house just a mile off the trail. The last day, April 19, we hiked around 17 miles to the trail head. We had a great time, the weather was perfect (it only rained heavy two nights during the overnight.) It is true, there is a lot of road walking, not good spacing of shelters, and just a couple places where you can resupply. Overall, it was a really great experience! I found the trail guide to be extremely helpful, and the trail was really well marked throughout the entire trail.

Congratulations! I admire anyone who can hike that distance in that kind of time. The Midstate does offer some beautiful sights.
