This 6 mile hike was not our intention so we ended up twice as far away from our car at Barre Falls. Since we knew we were headed in a southerly direction on Davis Street, we thought we were going in the correct direction toward Barre Falls. And if we'd paid attention to the road crossings and that at one point we could see Wachusett Mountain, we could have corrected our direction!
It was a very nice hike though. Lots of remote woods and a very scenic Ware river bridge crossing where we ate lunch. As usual we saw no other hikers or wildlife. We saw quite a few birds and some sheep at the end on the Four Corners conservation area. The black flies and regular flies were fierce in the woods though, even loaded up with bug repellent. We did encounter something strange though. About halfway into the woods we heard a yell like from a kid not too far ahead of us. As we kept moving forward it got louder, joined by several other voices that were clearly howling like wolves. We stopped dead in our tracks waiting for something to come up the trail. Some serious barking of some type of puppies and the howling continued as we inched forward and the trail turned away from where the sound was coming from. I'm thinking it was probably a coyote den and we startled the parents. So I'm glad the trail led away from there!
