If not lets start one!

I was wondering if there are any hikes planned for 2015 season? Also are you allowed to backpack on this trail?

Does anyone know if there's a 2014 site of hikes planned? Ok , how about 2015? I don't see any replies to your last thread. Did you ever find out if there were any?

Looking a head to 2017. I am thinking of doing a thru-hike of the Mid State Trail. Was going to do it solo or with one other. If there is a group or someone(s) who have completed this in the past and would like to again I am down for company. If anyone would like to meet and share trail stories and tips that would be most helpful also.

I've done the AT in Western MA solo for a week so can offer a little advice. A lot is learned by step up experience. Old school says get hiking boots and spend time breaking them in to the point they feel perfectly natural as they will offer ankle and arch support. Days hikes help here. That being said I have been seeing people with strong ankles hike in a hiking sneaker, sandals and even five-finger shoes. They are my favorite backup shoe and better then flip-flops at the campsite in the evenings. Your feet and stamina are the two important physical elements that get the hike done. Your mind is the most important to stay smart and get past the not so nice days of cold wet giving way to a glorious day of sun and a cool breeze. Your mind will question why you are out here doing this. Then there is the need to filter all water. Shelter and food round off the top items I can think of. You are right to seek out experience but do your homework and know your gear well before you hit the trail. Set up the shelter and boil water safely in the backyard or on an overnight campout. Solo is risky so plan to be very attentive to surroundings and strangers on the trail. Have a plan to deal with contingencies; example have a good waterproof whistle. There is safety in numbers so taking along a friend is advised but know they are an individual and friendship may be tested on the trail. Still a pair can split up gear and most dehydrated meals are portioned for two. Some wish to leave the smartphone at home here again the true hiker weighs the pros and cons of multipurpose items, you can always go airplane mode or shut it off when not taking pictures or recording a video. Just a few notes I remember.
